Valentine's Day with Tempel 1

Comets seem to have difficult love lives. It's those unpredictable orbs, I guess.

And NASA just can't leave them alone. At least the Comet called Temple 1 has become a stalker target for the space agency.

Back in 2005 as a sort of July 4 celebration another NASA spacecraft called Deep Impact shot a bullet into Temple 1. This created a big dust cloud. I seem to remember watching President Bush get excited about that in an interview on TV. Cowboys need to say "Yee Haw" when stuff like this happens.

At that time, Temple 1 was shaped like a potato. Wonder what he/she/it is now.

Tomorrow, as a sort of Valentine's Day kiss off the NASA spacecraft called Stardust will fly within 125 miles of Temple 1 at a speed of 24,000 mph. What's a little Fly By to Break a Comet's Heart? Geez, I thought we Mars in Leo women attracted bad dates. Love em and leave em, yeah, yeah, I know the drill, always imagined NASA scientists to be more stable than this but how would I know?

Was wondering where Temple 1's Mars is. He/She/It was discovered on Apr. 3, 1867. This gives a tight Sun-Neptune conjunction at 14-15 Aries. That explains her mysterious allure. Also, to be honest, she's probably no stranger to pole dancing herself. This also explains why she threw up such a fluffy cloud of billowing dust to hide in when NASA shot her (I'm assuming she's a she when I shouldn't be, not PC).

Temple's got Venus 1 Pisces which explains her extremely dramatic love life, as well. And, oops, with Mars 21 Cancer, that gives some turbulence on the home front. All the rest of the comets get to just spin around in their weird little orbs, minding their own business, and nobody hounds them.

Turns out that Mars in Cancer really does seem to be the attraction for NASA, astro-wise. When NASA shot Temple 1 back in 2005, the Sun was passing over the comet's natal Mars. Tomorrow, or Feb. 15 maybe?, the Moon will be in conjunction with the placement of Mars when Temple was discovered. There is also a Sun-Neptune conjunction (in Aquarius) which mirrors the original Sun-Neptune conjunction. This promises to be a very Romantic Interlude of missed connections and unrequited love for the Comet.

Tunguska Event of 1908

What's a good astrological chart for a date when a comet hits the earth? This is good to know for future reference I suppose. Just this past June, scientists have claimed that a huge explosion which occurred in the Russian outback was most likely caused by the entrance of a comet into the earth's atmosphere.

I saw a TV show on it the other night. Who knew the History Channel could be so interesting? I don't even think I was drunk that night.

At any rate, I remember hearing an Astronomer on the Radio (NPR Driveway Moment) say that earth is possibly going to be in the way of another comet in April sometime in the future, can't remember what year, 2030 something? I don't think I wrote anything about the chart on this blog, but do remember that I looked it up and couldn't say one way or the other if it looked for a good day for a comet to hit the earth.

The 1908 Tunguska blast leveled 830 square miles of forest somewhere on the Tunguska River in Russia, wherever that is. The impact of the blast which is said to have exploded in the air is said to have been equivalent to the Castle Bravo thermonuclear explosion in the U.S. Feb. 1954, or 1,000 times the blast of Little Boy in Hiroshima. Trees fell down like in a radiating pattern from where the center of the blast is considered to have been except for the ones in the center which stood up straight, kind of like how they apparently did with little boy. The night sky was said to have been light as day for many nights afterwards.

Assuming that I have the date correct (there's confusion between two dates due to the fact that Russia was using the Julian Calendar, that date is June 17, 1908) here is the basic information I have picked up from Wikipedia:

Tunguska "Event"
June 30, 1908 7:14 am Krasnoyarsk, Russia, Podkamennaya (Lower Stony) Tunguska River

Sun 8 Cancer; Moon 23 Cancer; NN 5 Cancer; ASC 18 Leo; MC 28 Aries

This chart shows 6 planets in the sign of Cancer which includes all the Inner Planets. (NN, Sun, Moon, Neptune, Mercury, Venus, Mars) Mercury and Venus are moving in Retrograde Motion.

This event would have happened inbetween a set of 3 Eclipses which were connected with an outer planet t-square: Neptune 15 Cancer opposing Uranus 16 Capricorn making a square to apex Saturn 11 Aries.

Because of the involvement with the Eclipses, the Nodal Axis was also involved, crossing the Cancer-Capricorn Axis at 5 degrees.

Pluto was at 25 Gemini. According to Paul O. Hewit, this would have opposed the position of the Galactic Center which was at 25 Sa 35 in 1908.

The Eclipses around this time:

June 14, 1908: Sun conjunct Pluto 24-25 Gemini, Mercury St Rx

June 28, 1908 Solar annular, Sun conjunct Moon 7 Cancer

July 13, 1908 Lunar appulse Sun opposing Moon 22 Cancer-Capricorn over the Neptune 15 Cancer opposition to Uranus 15 Capricorn Rx.

Mercury and Venus both Retrograde for most of this time in Cancer9 - 18 degrees.

Jupiter Hit By UFO!!!

No, this isn't a National Enquirer headline. Something really did hit Jupiter and NASA snapped a photo. How's that for a literal interpretation of the Jupiter-Neptune conjunction in Aquarius?

Neptune rules photography, Aquarius rules Technology and Outer Space. And there's even another reference that dates back to events in 1994 (see yesterday's blog entry) so Capricorn is somehow involved. That's when a Comet slammed into Jupiter. I'm jealous. What was that other comet's name? Forgot. Oh well.

Apparently an amateur photographer saw the collision first and then NASA caught the photo on Monday morning at some point (I think the collision date is 7/19-20/09 but am not real sure). Ouch! Yahoo article here.

That's the 40 year anniversary for the U.S. landing on the moon, maybe even a Saturn-Uranus-Pluto in Virgo/Pisces cycle is involved.

Wonder what the Astrology would look like from Jupiter's point of view. I think he has a bunch of Moons of his own so our little Eclipses here on Earth aren't to blame for his woes. He's just too big and too gravitational. Oooh, this is reminding me of my Magic Federal Reserve Chairman Ben the Jupiterienne. Don't ever let this economy get better, Ben. I can't live without your cute face plastered all over the media.

What was I talking about? Oh, forget it.
